Tips for Packing Shipments Properly When Going to School Overseas

Today, many students are opting to go overseas for medical school or to pursue other education opportunities. There are many fine medical schools in the Caribbean and in South America and students are flocking to these educational institutions. While this is a practical choice, it also presents students with the issue of having to move all of their belongings to their new home where they will be living when they complete their medical school program.

In order to make sure that their shipment arrives successfully, students should be sure to carefully package their items for shipment. These tips can help.

Begin by deciding what needs to be packed

Your first step in packing your shipment when going abroad to school is to make sure you have a clear idea of what you need to bring with you. You may not necessarily want to bring every single thing you own, instead opting to leave unnecessary items with family or in storage if you plan to return to the United States after you have finished your education. Bringing clothing is essential, of course, as well as personal belongings. You may bring books with you or you may wish to purchase books once you have gotten to your school so you do not have to transport them.

The less you can bring, the lighter and smaller your package and the easier it will be to ship. You also need to account for the fact that you may not necessarily have a lot of space in your living accommodations while attending school.

List the items that you are bringing with you

This will be helpful in case you need to provide an inventory to customs or in case anything happens to your shipment. Your shipping company will explain to you exactly what the requirements are as far as customs and importing items into the destination where you are going. If you choose a good shipping company, you also shouldn’t have to worry about your shipment becoming damaged on the journey. Still, it is helpful to make sure you know what you are packing.

 Arrange like items together
Fragile items, for example, should be put with other fragile items. If you are bringing toiletries or perfumed items, those should be kept together. If you are bringing any type of food items, those need to be kept away from the toiletries you are packing so they do not pick up the scent or flavor. Clothing and other non-breakable items should also be arranged together. This will make it easier for you to carefully pack the items since you can put fragile items into the center and use the clothing and soft items to shield them.

Package the items carefully into appropriate size containers

You should be sure to wrap anything that is fragile or may break. The exact specifics of what type of container you need and how items should be arranged within it will vary depending upon the type of shipment you are sending. Your shipping company can advise you on how to best pack and ship your items.
