Air Freight Shipping Which Documentation are you Responsible for Generating?

When shipping international, using air freight or ocean freight services, the law requires that the shipper completes international shipping documentation to transport a shipment and for customs purposes upon arrival at destination. Some of these documents will be completed by the air freight shipping company. Others must be generated by you, the shipper.

Which documents are you responsible for completing? The exact documentation may vary depending on where you’re shipping to, what type of contents you’re shipping, and the value of your shipment, but these are the primary documents shippers typically must complete.

  • Shipper’s Letter of Instruction
  • Air Waybill
  • Commercial Invoice or Proforma Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Import Goods Declaration
  • Export Goods Declaration

If you’re sending dangerous goods, like hazardous materials or live animals, there may be extra documentation to be completed.
